Gorgeous Paths for Wheelchair Cruising

The best feature of our SeaChange village of Barwon Heads is miles of level footpaths for wheelchair cruising. See our photos and maps for your next visit in our blog here.

Accessible Accommodation

Miles and Miles Of Level Footpaths.

There is nothing better than being able to explore in the sunshine. Barwon Heads certainly ticks that box. So make sure your battery is fully charged, and set off on an adventure with us.

Possibly the most popular path begins with a short cruise from 100 Hitchcock to the beach a few blocks away. The path meanders along the Barwon river into town. The paths are all level, and gravel paving. Occasionally you may hit a spot of beach sand after a windy day but for the most part, enjoy meandering along the Teatree path and watch the birdlife.

You may want to stop for a loo break, a BBQ or let the kids play in the playground.

The toilets are clean and wheelchair accessible too.

Continue to the Barwon Heads Bridge where you will find sculptures and seating to watch the waves and kids paddling. Stop for a coffee at Ebb & Flow. A cafe renowned for their awesome coffee and cakes.

From there, you can cross the Barwon Heads Bridge, and then back again. The bridge is a perfect fishing spot too, with the tide coming in there is a good chance of catching a meal for the evening.

The Bridge is a particularly lovely spot during sunrise and sunset. If you love photography, perhaps time your wheelchair cruise and send us some snaps!

Continue your cruise to At The Heads Restaurant, a scene from the TV series SeaChange. A mix of concrete and timber paths, and very scenic.

From there, follow the timber path to the jetty. Another great fishing spot. Naturally the wooden planks are a bit bumpy, however, you will love the view.

From the jetty, meander along the concrete paths running parallel to the ocean, stopping at The Bluff. It is a marine sanctuary, so you will see quite a lot of birdlife.

Return to the Bridge and Roundabout with excellent level crossings and wander into town along Hitchcock Avenue and back to the house.

Here is a map outlining where you can feel comfortable wheelchair cruising. The orange markings cover all of the above pictures. The yellow markings cover several kilometres along the inland part of the river in the photos below.

It includes several kilometres along the inland part of the Barwon Heads River. Meandering north of the property, follow the path inside the park, along the street and access the long flat river path. Explore fishing spots, and meander through farmland. It is really beautiful and peaceful.

Barwon Heads Market – Activities At 100 Hitchcock

Possibly the best way to immerse yourself in a village community is to attend their town market. Certainly, this the case for our local market. Held year-round, The Barwon Heads Market is a minute walk from 100 Hitchcock.

It is held every Saturday from December to January in the peak season.  While, for quieter months, it is held on the last Saturday every month from February to November.

The stalls numbers vary each week. Generally, there is a variety of Fresh food and lovely homewares.  (Fresh fruit, vegetables, jams, lavender, oils, plants, homemade crafts and jewellery.

There’s also Devonshire tea and sausage sizzle to be enjoyed.

It’s not big, however, you will feel a part of the village. Even better, it is worth a short 1-minute stroll from 100 Hitchcock (Corner Hitchcock Avenue and Ozone Street) at the community hall.

For an extensive list of other markets nearby, check out our blog post here.

Best Restaurants in Barwon Heads

Best Restaurants Barwon Heads- The Top 3

Are you looking for the best Places to eat out or grab a great coffee?

The village of Barwon Heads offers a great variety of places to eat . You are very much spoilt for choice when staying at 100 Hitchcock. Here are the top 3 of the best restaurants Barwon Heads that the locals’ love, and why they are so special.

Beach House Barwon Heads

This restaurant was once the old Fire Station and consistently provides great food, with the menu changing rather frequently. As with most seaside towns, restaurants come and go each year. No matter when you eat here, it is always consistently good. Beach House serves up a modern Australian cuisine for breakfast, lunch & dinner. Great range of local wine and craft beer.

If you love seafood, I highly recommend the Bouillabaisse – chilli & tomato broth packed with prawns, scallops, white fish, calamari & mussels. Yum! They are top of the list of the best restaurants in Barwon Heads for seafood.

Just a 5-minute walk – in the centre of town on Hitchcock street. Check out their menu and  book here

Starfish Bakery

Just a block away from 100 Hitchcock is my favourite place to delight the senses for brunch– Starfish Bakery. Creativity and fresh produce is the key to their success as an institution in Barwon Heads. Furthermore, Their staff are consistently friendly and helpful. I highly recommend breakfast here, especially “green eggs and ham”.

Oh, and their muffins are to die for.

Hanoi Kitchen

The star performer is Hanoi Kitchen. Located a 6-minute walk to the main roundabout, this is a location that (until recently) constantly changed ownership and food themes. The current owners have hit the right notes of restaurant success with superb Vietnamese food. Best of all, they deliver! (If you are not up for a 6-minute walk!)

So what makes this place so special? It’s the owners, Hong & Nick and their global hospitality experience.  Hong grew-up around the amazing aromas of the market, where her family owned a food stall. Her dream was to one day own her own restaurant and worked for some of the very best resorts in Vietnam. She incorporates a perfect blend of Vietnamese cooking with French influences. Most notably, they have both worked in 5-star resorts, so you can understand why their service is so good too!

Do you like Banh Mi? I know this dish is really basic, however, their dish is my favourite!  I don’t know their secret ingredients, however, it is the first thing I grab when arriving in Barwon Heads for the weekend.

From Blueberry picking to purchasing cheese from where the goats produce it, the scent of ripe grapes ready for picking and sampling the diverse range of wine. So hop in the car and follow your nose for delicious wine, organic produce and the freshest seafood.

Adrenaline anyone? Skydiving Barwon Heads

Skydiving the Great Ocean Road is THE ultimate adrenalin rush. You can Tandem skydive, with about 1 full minute of free fall, then about 7 minutes floating above the Great Ocean Road and Barwon Heads.

Whilst I haven’t yet worked up the courage, friends have done it, and raved about it for weeks afterwards.

Taking off from Barwon Heads airport (weather permitting), the location is about 6 kilometres from 100 Hitchcock on Barwon Heads road.

Actually, whilst you are there, the airport is also a great place to buy the freshest seafood too. (Check out our other blog about this here.)

I have added a link to the crew who run the skydiving at the airport for you here.

A Locals Guide to the Best Food Shops In Barwon Heads

You have a chef style kitchen, now you’ll need ingredients.

Where are the best food shops in Barwon Heads?

We are passionate about cooking, so we stocked every conceivable gadget in the kitchen for guests to enjoy.  The Ilve 6 burner stove and the extra large oven is my favourite. The next part- where to find great ingredients for a home cooked meal, and who are the best food shops in Barwon Heads?

The Best Meat In Barwon Heads

THE best meat you will ever find is located at “Benno’s Meating Place” in town, about a 5-minute walk from 100 Hitchcock. The crew at Benno’s are constantly making up gorgeous variations to take home, already prepared for our guests to salivate over.  Whilst Benno’s have won awards all over Victoria for their sausages, we highly recommend their roasts. Whenever we return from a weekend at 100 Hitchcock, we stock the esky full of Benno’s meats to take back to Melbourne. Their point of difference is they smoke their meat on site. I’d say Benno’s is the one of the best of the food shops in Barwon Heads and the Bellarine region.

Bennos

The Best Everyday Items In Barwon Heads

For everyday items, the IGA in Barwon Heads is ideal. They stock a great range of spices, dips and bread.  We love grabbing pizza making ingredients for a quick and easy meal. Also, their bottle shop is cheaper than the actual bottle shop next door, and stock a great range of wines from the Bellarine area. Surprisingly, they are only a little dearer than the big brand supermarkets in Ocean Grove.

The Best Wine In Barwon Heads

Of course, the widest selection of wines and ciders can be found at The Barwon Heads Wine Store, just a block away from 100 Hitchcock.  Worth strolling for 3 minutes down the road for a wine tasting. Why not watch the sunset at the beach with a bottle of vino from one of the many beautiful wines from the Bellarine wine region. Or, enjoy the covered entertaining area and our big BBQ at 100 Hitchcock.

The Best Cooking Ingredients In Barwon Heads

Annie’s Provedore just a 5-minute walk down the street offers catering if you don’t have the energy to cook. They source a wonderful selection of locally grown produce too, as well as unique products from Italy. However I do recommend you first check for ingredients in the IGA supermarket as their prices are cheaper, and stock an excellent range. Check out their catering options here.

The Best Seafood In Barwon Heads

Now, I have saved the best till last. You may have passed the Barwon Heads Airport before arriving at 100 Hitchcock. At the Barwon Heads airport, you’ll find a great selection of fish freshly flown in from around Victoria. I am salivating just thinking about their Coffin Bay Oysters and Portarlington Mussels. Their fish is flown in daily from areas such as King Island and parts of Victoria. Check them out here.

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to food shopping in Barwon Heads. Now go cook up a storm at 100 Hitchcock! We would love to see pics of your creations too! Share them on our Facebook or Instagram page. Or, if you just simply want to find the best places to dine out, check our other blog here.
